Know What's Fair Before You Hire
HVAC repair pricing varies wildly — and most homeowners have no idea if they're getting a fair deal. Here's what common repairs should actually cost.
Why Do HVAC Prices Vary So Much?
Location
Labor rates differ by 40% or more between metro areas and rural towns. A $300 repair in one ZIP code could be $500 in another — both might be fair.
Parts vs. Labor Split
A compressor replacement is mostly parts cost. A refrigerant leak is mostly labor. Knowing the split helps you understand what you're actually paying for.
Timing
Peak season (summer for AC, winter for heat) means higher demand and higher prices. Off-season repairs can be 15–25% cheaper for the same work.
System Type
A basic split system is cheaper to service than a variable-speed heat pump or a packaged rooftop unit. Equipment complexity directly impacts labor time and parts availability.
Typical Costs for Common Repairs
National averages — actual costs vary by ZIP code and system type.
| Repair | Low End | Typical | High End |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermostat replacement | $120 | $250 | $450 |
| Capacitor replacement | $100 | $200 | $350 |
| Contactors / relays | $150 | $275 | $400 |
| Refrigerant recharge (R-410A) | $200 | $400 | $600 |
| Blower motor replacement | $300 | $550 | $900 |
| Evaporator coil repair | $400 | $700 | $1,200 |
| Compressor replacement | $1,200 | $2,000 | $3,500 |
| Circuit board / control board | $200 | $450 | $800 |
Red Flags: When a Quote Isn't Fair
If a contractor won't put it in writing, walk away. A legitimate HVAC company provides a detailed quote before starting work.
"This price is only good today" is a red flag. Fair contractors give you time to compare — especially on big-ticket replacements.
"Repair AC — $1,800" isn't an estimate. You should see parts, labor, and any trip/diagnostic fees broken out separately.
A quote 2x the typical range without a clear reason (after-hours, specialty parts) is suspicious. A quote at half the typical price often means corners are being cut.
